“Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh”
a condensed version of the bilingual sermon delivered by Kyle Tade on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the First United Church of Christ of Joliet, IL

God Bless you this morning and I thank you for the invitation and the welcome I have received to be with you.

Dios bendígase esta mañana y muchas gracias para la invitación y los bienvenidos que yo hubiera recibido.

Good morning! And what a beautiful morning it is, for this is a day that the Lord has most assuredly made!

Buenos días! Y qué bonita la mañana sea, porque este día es un día que creó Dios.

In a few days, we celebrate Epiphany, the actual birthday of Jesus Christ. The night before, we await in anticipation as the 3 Kings, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar follow the Star of David to Bethlehem, carrying with them very distinct gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. After doing some research, I realized how appropriate and different these three gifts are, when it comes to their relationship with the Christ child.

En pocos días, celebramos Epiphany, el cumpleaños actual del nuestro Salvador Jesucristo. La noche antes, esperamos con anticipación como los Tres Reyes (Magos) Caspar, Melquior y Baltasar siguen la Estrella de David, llevando con ellos regalitos muy distintos: oro, frankincense y myrrh. Después de buscar mas información, Me di cuento como perfecta y diferente son los regalitos y como pertenecen a la relación con el niño Jesucristo.

The first gift mentioned in the story is the gift of gold. The first word that comes to mind when I think of gold is precious. Gold is something that many of us cherish because it is usually expensive; it’s pretty, and is a symbol of status and sometimes, depending on what it’s shaped into, can show how somebody feels about us. Gold can also be seen shining and sparkling on the brightest of days or even in the darkest of nights, always visible, no matter what the situation.

El primer regalito mencionado en este cuento es el regalito del oro. La primera palabra que yo pienso cuando oigo "oro" es preciosa. El oro es algo que muchas respetan porque suele caro, bonito y un símbolo de estatus y algunas veces, depende en la forma, puede mostrar los sentimientos de una persona a otra. El oro puede ver brillando y sparkling en los días mas brillantes o brillando en las noches de oscuridad total, siempre visto, sin cuidado a la situación.

Christ is like the gold the king offered. This was a gift that God gave to us. As an infant, his life was so precious and so valued, something that a King tried to put a price on but the rest of the world could not. The Christ child was cherished by his virgin mother, and as his mother, it elevated her status above others, as the vessel or the bearer of the God child. We find Christ in so many different forms, in all different shapes and sizes, in each and every one of us. God gave up Christ’s life so that we may know his love deep within our hearts and share that love with one another.

Jesucristo es como el oro que ofreció el rey. Este era un regalito que Dios nos dio. Como bebe, su vida era tan preciosa y valorada, algo que un Rey trató de imponer un premio pero el resto del mundo no pude hacerlo. El niño Cristo abrigaba por su madre virgen, y como su madre, se le eleva su estatus más alto que otros, como la mujer que dar la luz de Dios. Encontramos Jesucristo en tantas formas diferentes, como Jesucristo vive adentro de cada persona aquí y en el mundo. Muy diferente, ¿no? Pues, Dios sacrificio la vida de Jesucristo para que sepamos su amor profundo dentro nuestros corazones y compartamos ese amor con cada otro.

Like Gold, Christ can be seen on the brightest of days as we celebrate the good times of our lives, the births, the birthdays, the anniversaries, the weddings, the yesterdays, the today’s and the breath of life for the tomorrows. Meanwhile, Christ remains among us as we mourn the losses of loved ones, of relationships. Christ is the gold shining into the darkness as we struggle to make ends meet in this economy. As we struggle with figuring out whom we are and what God has called us to do in this life and the next.

Como oro, Jesucristo se puede ver en los días tan brillantes como celebramos los buenos tiempos que ocurren en nuestras vidas, como dar las luces, los cumpleaños, los aniversarios, bodas, los ayeres, los hoyes, y el respiro de la vida para mañana. Mientras tanto, Jesucristo se queda aquí con nosotros cuando nos sentimos la pena de la muerte, de las relaciones perdidas. Jesucristo es el oro brillando dentro la oscuridad como nos esfuerzamos para ganar la vida, como esfuerzamos como sabiendo y decidiendo quiénes somos y a qué cosa especifica, nos llama Dios.

God is precious as gold.

Jesucristo es tan precioso como el oro.

The second gift the Gospel mentions is that of Frankincense. A resin that is used in incense and perfumes. Though there was a unique quality that I found in doing some research. Frankincense can grow in extremely harsh environments, environments that are incredibly unforgiving. This strength is in part because they have such deep roots that prevent the tree from being torn away. It is said that they can even grow roots through rock.

El Segundo regalito que menciona La Palabra es de Frankincense. Una resina que se usa para los incense y perfumes. Aunque había algo único que yo encontrara. Frankincense puede cultivar en ambientes muy duros de las extremas. Este fuerte es porque tienen raíces muy profundas, y largo que le previene la destrucción del árbol. Es dicho que puede cultivar por los roques.

The way I see it, Jesus is our roots, and we are the plant that must face the unforgiving environments. We live in a world where there is so much suffering, and pain, and anger towards ourselves and each other that we fail to see the good at all. The reason I believe is because we’ve lost sight of our roots. Because we cannot see them it makes it all the more easier. Christ gave us an opportunity to see God’s love for ourselves, in the flesh, like a plant in a flower pot, being taken away to be planted outside because the time is right. The people nearly 2000 years ago saw the living God, breathing, eating, and speaking. Just because we do not see Christ in the traditional sense does not mean that we can forget he’s there. It means that we have to work harder to remember our roots, and our foundation, because without it, we will be ripped apart by a harsh and unforgiving environment.

Como yo puedo verlo, Jesucristo es nuestras raíces, y somos la planta que enfrentar los ambientes difíciles, y peligrosos. Vivimos en un mundo donde hay tanto sufriendo, y pena y enojado hacia nosotros mismos y cada otra persona que fallamos a ver el bueno en general. La razón, que yo creo, es porque hemos perdido la vista de nuestras raíces. Porque no podemos verlas está más fácil a perderlas. Jesucristo nos dio una oportunidad pa’ ver el amor de Dios en nuestro mundo, en forma de carne y hueso, como una flor en una maceta, tomando pa’ poner en la tierra porque la hora es correcta. Hace 2000 años que la gente vio el Dios viviendo, respirando, comiendo, hablando. Y justo porque no podemos ver Jesucristo en el método tradicional, no significa que se nos olvidamos allí. Solamente significa que hemos que trabajar más duro pa’ recordar nuestras raíces, y nuestra fundación, porque sin tenerlo, no sobrevivimos el ambiente difícil y duro.

Jesucristo, como frankincense, fuerte a nuestros bases y El es nuestra fundación.

The third gift of the kings, who came to visit the Christ child, was that of Myrrh. Another plant used for incense, and used for its resin in construction. This one was a bit trickier, besides the traditional and similar uses to frankincense nothing really stood out as unique until…I saw this. Myrrh was used as an ingredient in embalming fluid for several hundred years, but more uniquely, Nicodemus used myrrh in the embalming fluid that while preparing Christ’s body for burial after the crucifixion.

El tercera regalito de los reyes quien vinieron el niño Cristo, era Myrrh. Otra planta usada para los incense, y usada para la resina en la construcción. Es un poco más difícil, además las usadas tradicionales como frankincense, no hay nada que separa myrrh de frankincense. Pero, esta cosa muy única. Myrrh usaba como alimento en embalming fluid para cientos de anos, pero mas únicamente, Nicodemus usó myrrh en el embalming fluid cuando preparaba el cuerpo de Jesucristo para el entierro después de la crucifixión.

Now, a little weird, I know but hear this. God must have called whoever had brought the myrrh to do so as a way of predicting or foretelling of the sacrifice that Christ would make some 33 years after this day. It’s as though that gift giver was already preparing even the infant Christ for his death.

Claro, un poco extraño pero escúchenme. Dios hubiera llamado quienquiera trajo el myrrh para hacerlo como manera de predecir el sacrificio de la muerte que Jesucristo haría, unos 33 años mas tarde. Es como, el dador del regalito ya preparaba el bebe Jesucristo para su muerte.

But what does this mean for us? It means in our beginnings, when God was creating us in each of our mother’s wombs, we had a call. In this life, we have a call to do something that will benefit the greater good and give God glory and thanks for using us as the vessels for his work here on this earth. We may have heard it, we may have accepted it, we may be struggling with it, or we may still be waiting for it. But we must watch, and listen, we must pay attention.

¿Qué nos significa? Significa que nuestras comienzas, cuando Dios en el cielo nos creaba dentro de nuestras madres, tuvimos una llamada, teníamos una llamada. En esta vida, tenemos una llamada pa’ hacer algo que beneficia lo bueno mejor y que dé Dios gloria y gracias para usándonos como instrumentos para su trabajo aquí en la tierra. Oiremos, aceptaremos, nos esforzaremos, o esperaremos. Pero, hemos que mirar, y escuchar y prestar atención.

Christ like the myrrh, was preparing to receive his call.

Jesucristo, como el myrrh, preparaba a recibir su llamada.

Let us pray,

Gracious God, you have given the Christ child these three important gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. You have given us an opportunity to see why exactly it is these three things you have chosen. Help us to look at the gifts in our own lives and see what they mean; whether they be people, places, things, or events. Help us to understand what it is by your will for us to do. Help us to remember Christ, so precious, and the foundation of our lives, preparing for his call, that we may never forget his gift to us by his death so that we may have life.

We thank you, O Lord for everything you have given us. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dios glorioso, le ha dado al niño Jesucristo estos tres regalitos tan importantes de oro, frankincense y myrrh. Señor, nos ha dado la oportunidad para ver exactamente por qué estas tres cosas fueron escogidos. Nos ayuda Señor a mirar nuestros regalos en nuestras vidas a ayúdanos a ver lo que significan; si son gente, o lugares, cosas o eventos. Ayúdanos a comprender lo que nos querría por su voluntad. Ayúdanos a recordar Jesucristo, tan precioso y la fundación de nuestras vidas, preparando para su llamado, ayúdanos que no nos olivamos su regalo a nosotros por su muerte para que ahora tengamos la vida.
